Peterborough 3 v 18 HBU (Kings)
Location: Bushfields Arena (Peterborough); Time: 14.00; Date: 29th April 2012
Herne Bay United went into the game knowing that a win would put them back on top of Premier League. Peterborough were coming into the game full of confidence having beaten Manchester 12-4 the day before. United went after them straight away scoring 3 goals in the first 5 minutes. Peterborough then slowly came back into the game, and for the next 10 minutes they managed to keep United at bay. However with 11 minutes remaining in the half United broke through again with another flurry of goals, scoring 3 more in a 90 second period to go 0-6 up. A few of the Peterborough players visibly let their heads drop and United knew the victory was theirs. With 5 minutes left in the half United scored twice more to go 0-8 up. Peterborough did manage to score from a penalty to make the half time score 1-8.
The second half was more of a formality. United knew they
had won the game it was just a question of by how much. Peterborough did manage to keep them out for 5 minutes but then the goals started raining in, 7 unanswered goals from United made the score 1-15. Then with just under 4 minutes left Peterborough scored their 2nd of the match (2-15), United responded immediately with 3 goals in the last 3 minutes to go 2-18 up. It was Peterborough who would end the scoring with a goal right on the final whistle to make the final score 3-18 to HBU.
After the game United striker David Todd said: “We are pleased to have won the game. Only 2 games left now. It moves us back to the top of the league which is nice. It is my first season with HBU and I am loving every minute of it. It’s a completely new experience for me to be in a team challenging for the title. I am learning a lot from the players and the manager. Our final 2 games of the season are against the other 2 teams in the title chase so it doesn’t get much bigger than this. We know if we win them both we will win the league and the National Title, everyone seems so relaxed though, the manager just tells us to go out and enjoy it, and we are. Obviously the rest of the squad have all been in this position countless times and to them it’s just another title run in, but for me I am loving the experience”.
Player manager Phil Mcvey added: “It was a very good
performance from the players today. Their attitude was good, and the team work was excellent, the goals we scored were spread throughout the team and there we
My eyes are on developing the team, with a view of challenging for the title in 2 years with a team that can be dominant for the following decade. To be this position is an added bonus. As a club we are undergoing a rebuilding exercise from the Under 9’s all the way up to the first team. If we can win the title during this period then that is a bonus. The most important thing is that the club has a bright future and we need to provide the solid foundations to enable the club to challenge for every competition at every level for many years to come”.re as many team goals as there were individual goals so that was good to see. Following last week’s match between Grimsby & Middlesbrough which ended in a 3-3 draw, we are now back on top of the table. To be honest I am surprised to be in this position, when Middlesbrough thrashed us at our place in January we thought the title had gone, it gave us the opportunity to take stock of how we were performing as a team. Since then we have changed the way we play dramatically. It is not a quick fix, the new system should take us a couple of years to get used to, as the manager I have not been considering where we finish in the league this year.
