HBU U11 Eastern Counties Division 1 Champions
The strength of Roller Hockey is in the Eastern Counties region and the ECRHA League is in effect the National League for the junior age-groups.
United went into this tournament needing just 1 point to clinch the title over rivals Grimsby but Grimsby drew with Peterborough in the opening match of the day which put HBU in pole position before they played their 1st match.
HBU went through the day unbeaten in all 3 matches, Peterborough 4 -1, Cambridge 8 – 5 and Grimsby 5 – 3. These look like reasonably comfortable wins but the reality was that HBU only took control of the games in the last 4 minutes.
Against Grimsby in the final match of the day after an opening goal by Sian Emslie, HBU found themselves 1 – 3 down at half-time. In the second half the team showed their energy and determination and led by captain George Daly with an outstanding display by Jamie Leonard in goal they scored 4 and allowed no reply by Grimsby.
Team Manager Ron Barker commented “all the teams in this division have improved over the season, particularly in defence as they know our team will come at them. We have had to raise our game too to find shooting space and we scored a fantastic team goal from a move that included all four players. Our finishing was not good at times but these players want it, don’t give up and play to the end of the match. It’s been my privilege to be their manager this season”.
Coming up on 30th June the HBU Under 11s face Cottenham (Cambridge) in the National Cup final at the Bay Arena. HBU’s Under 13s are also in the Cup Final for their age category.
