HBU Under 13’s Start with Strong performances in Eastern Counties

Posted by HBU Admin on September 11, 2012

Herne Bay United U 13 team began the Eastern Counties season with their ‘home tournament’ taking place in Sudbury. HBU club training commences the week following this tournament, so the last time the players had their skates on was nearly 2 months ago!
HBU squad contained many of the players from their National Cup triumph in July.
HBU first game against an inexperienced Norwich side was ideal as a gentle introduction to the season and the hosts scored regularly throughout the game with the half time score 13-0 and the final score 21-0 with goals from Noah(6), Jamie & George(5 each), Luke(2) and Sian (1) and two own goals

The next game against local rivals saw a strong Herne Bay team defending well and restricting HBU to a 3-0 lead at halftime, the second half continued in the same manner with HBU extending their lead to 7-0 George, Jamie (3 each) and Oli with his first of the season.
The next game was against a good Letchworth team who were also undefeated and expecting to take something from this match. HBU’s lack of training was obvious with play lacking speed or fluency and the chances that were created were not being turned into goals. A Letchworth attack saw them take the lead, the first goal conceded! HBU equalised with Sian finishing a good move only for Letchworth to regain the lead until late in the first half when a goal from Jamie saw the scores at half time level 2-2.

The message at half time was to not panic, speed up play and take chances. The team began the second half with more belief and focus and three goals with the first ninety seconds saw HBU in the lead 5-2 , continuing with the same focus HBU frustrated their opponents, preventing them scoring and continued to extend the lead with some great team goals, George(3), Oli & Sian (1 each ) and Jamie(5) saw HBU win the 2nd half 9-0 and finish the game 11-2.

The last game against last season’s cup final opponents was a slower game with the players effort from the earlier games, the lack of training and the heat taking its toll with HBU winning 10-0.

The effort by the players and the quality of the play was pleasing to see and a good start to the season, the players have not put skates on for nearly two months and on a hot day they acquitted themselves very well, not only in scoring regularly but conceding only 2 goals in four games.
