Youth Academy: HBU step up a gear in Eastern Counties!
EC U/15: Peterborough: Date 22nd Feb 2014
Herne Bay United U15’s travelled to Peterborough to compete in the EC u15 League- the third of 5 tournaments.
The fixture list was a challenging one in what is a very competitive league. During this tournament the team played with speed and fluency, creating many chances with some great passing and movement.
In the opening game of the day HBU faced an inexperienced side from Spen Valley. HBU began brightly and once they found some accuracy in front of goal they continued to score and at half time the score was 5-0. The consistent scoring continued in the 2nd half with the final score 10-1. Spen Valley’s goal came from a deflected shot just as the buzzer sounded and before the Referee signalled the end of the game. A good start with all players getting on the scoresheet and playing well.
Next game HBU played a strong Peterborough side, this fixture earlier in the season was also a close game and this one was no different. HBU just edged the 1st half with the score 1-0 at half time. Following a blue card, Rhys saved the resulting penalty & the team held out with 3 players. The 2nd half was also eventful with Peterborough scoring two early goals to lead 2-1. HBU were awarded a direct free hit which they converted to tie the game and then went on to regain the lead. At this stage both teams were one foul away from a direct free hit when Peterborough were awarded another free hit which again Rhys saved! HBU held on for the final few seconds to win a great match 3-2.
In their 3rd game, which was being considered a friendly HBU faced a strong Lethworth side and in a close & enjoyable match, HBU held on for a draw 1-1.
In the final game of the day against Cambridge, a team that had earlier in the season beaten HBU, the team played with greater confidence and leading 2-1 at half time HBU scored again with an excellent individual goal in the 2nd half to win 3-1.
A good days play from all the squad with every player focussing on ball speed, passing and moving at pace. In defence & attack the lads worked well for each other & if we had converted half of the chances created the scores would have looked even better. We know the levels of performance we can achieve.
