The Bay Arena saw a great weekend’s showcase of youth roller hockey over the Easter weekend when HBU hosted a tournament sponsored by Jewsons for Under 9s and Under 15s. There were 5 teams in each category making a total of 20 matches! HBU had 1 team in the Under15s and 2 teams in Under 9s.

Under 15s.

Without several players who were on National duty in Portugal and others on holiday, HBU were fielding a pretty young side with 3 of the players from their Under 13 squad. Even so, HBU made a strong start with a 7 – 0 win over Kent rivals Maidstone in a match where HBU’s players demonstrated team play which is often absent in their encounters in the South Eastern League. HBU then won against Grimsby 3 -2 after letting a commanding 3 – 0 slip towards the end of the match. Next up was French team Wasquehal and HBU made an encouraging start and held it together against the physically stronger French for a while before a bad run led to being 0 – 4 down at half-time. A solid second half performance produced a final score of 1 – 5. HBU’s team game held together pretty well against Lions United which was a team made up of Plymouth and local rivals RHC Invicta. Conceding just one goal in each half, HBU lost 0 – 2 which put them in 3rd place in the table. The French team – Wasquehal – were the worthy U15 winners with proficient play, not dropping a point and conceding only 4 goals over the weekend.

U15 RESULTS Points Goal Diff Position
Wasquehal 12 22 1
Lions United 9 6 2
HBU 6 2 3
Grimsby 1 -12 4
Maidstone 1 -19 5

HBU Team (goals): Jack Thomas, Harrison Raven (gks), Luke Huckstepp(4), Harry Slack(3), Archie Isaacs(1), Cameron Lawrie, Max Bassom, Noah Latham(2).

The Under 9s.

This category was won by local rivals Herne Bay on goal difference with the HBU Vipers!

Consistency is hard to achieve in this youngest age category and this showed itself in the results. Herne Bay beat the Vipers 4 – 2, Vipers beat Northern Stars 6 – 0 and then Northern Stars beat Herne Bay 2 – 1. Herne Bay and HBU Vipers finished level on points but Herne Bay had a one goal bigger goal difference.

HBU also had their Pythons team in the tournament. The Pythons have some of the even younger players and they acquitted themselves well going down 0 – 7 to the Vipers, 2 – 10 to Herne Bay, 0 – 2 to Wasquehal and 0 -2 to Northern Stars – a team put together from Manchester, Middlesbrough and Spen Valley.

HBU’s president Ron Barker commented “there was an old-style family feel about the weekend and it demonstrated the community spirit roller hockey has in Herne Bay and the quality of the development being achieved by all the clubs. Special thanks go to Simon Hosking for driving forward with this event and all our officials and helpers”.
