A Century on Wheels
Herne Bay United Roller Hockey and Skating Club (HBU) was founded in 1924, making it one of the oldest and most successful roller sports clubs in the world. For over 100 years, the club has been at the heart of the Herne Bay community, nurturing generations of skaters and achieving national and international success in both roller hockey and artistic skating.
HBU began when a small group of local skaters came together on the seafront to play what was then a new sport – roller hockey on traditional quad skates. From those early games grew a proud tradition of skill, creativity, and community spirit that continues to define the club today.
Over the decades, HBU has won multiple national league and cup titles, produced international players for England and Great Britain, and hosted prestigious tournaments at home. Alongside its hockey achievements, the club’s Artistic Section has flourished, with skaters competing across the UK and Europe in singles, pairs, and dance disciplines – showcasing the artistry and athleticism that make quad skating so special.
Today, HBU is home to skaters of all ages – from our youngest beginners taking their first laps, to our Premier League teams and artistic competitors performing at elite levels. We are proud of our 100-year legacy and excited about the next century of skating, teamwork, and community.
