HBU Under 13’s Eastern Counties in Kings Lynn

Posted by  on January 16, 2012

HBU Under 13 team travelled to Kings Lynn for three tough games at the weekend in their third tournament in EC Div 1.
They began slowly but managed a 6-0 win over Cambridge with Josh Butcher making his debut for HBU this season. 3 goals from George and a couple from Jamie and an own goal made this a comfortable game.
In the second game HBU faced a tough and disciplined Letchworth team knowing that a win was needed in order to challenge at the top of the table. HBU again began slowly and found themselves 2-1 down at halftime with George notching for HBU. The 2nd half saw HBU concede another sloppy goal and at 3-1 down. HBU then dominated the game with Will adding a second goal and HBU applying constant pressure to the Letchworth goal but were unable to equalise and lost a close game 3-2.
The final game saw HBU face the league leaders Kings Lynn.  Trying to dribble from the back cost HBU a soft goal. This was followed by an unfortunate own goal and then allowing a long shot –  HBU were 3 – 0 down with the match barely under way. The score stayed that way until half-time. HBU upped their game further after the interval to put enormous pressure on Kings Lynn and their goalkeeper who managed to keep out 4 shots in rapid succession from all 4 HBU players. Jamie scored to make it HBU 3-1 down but in trying to reduce the deficit HBU conceded a late goal to lose 4-1.
It was a day of mixed emotions with a combination of poor defending and decision making gifting the opposition goals in the close games, frustration at a lack of conversion of goal scoring chances and enjoyment when the team showed what they are capable of against the top teams with spectators commenting on the quality of the matches.
